Day 9 - Monday 3rd September

L’Escala and Surrounds

Distance – 115km

Overview.  Another wonderful day that involved lunch on the Costa Brava and a visit to the Dali museum in Figueres.

‘Rest Day’ . . .

Today was always going to be the 'rest-day' where we recovered a little from five days of 'continuous' riding.  The meeting time for breakfast was scheduled for the very civilized hour of 9:00am, but we were the only ones who made it at that time!  We all spent the rest of the morning doing stuff - laundry, writing things, phoning mothers and the like.  And Chris decided he was going to stay put for the day as he was feeling a little wobbly.

Lunch on the Beach . . .

At around 11:30am John, Liz, Lorraine and I headed off to Cadaques (B), which is at the tip of the Parque Natural Cap de Creus.  The first part of the ride to Roses was pretty boring, but things turned really interesting again when we crossed the headland and down into the beautiful Cadaques – a lovely little town set right on the waterfront.

Beautiful Cadaques

How sweet!

And this too . . .

We took a walk along the front to get the overall impression - it is apparently the birthplace of Dali, and Picasso also lived here for a time.  Lunch was in a delightful restaurant with very friendly staff – and which is owned by a company called ‘Looking at You George’.

The Power Rangers have arrived in Llanca!

Dali Bound . . .

The next destination was a fleeting visit to beautiful Llanca and then Figueres (D) to see the Dali museum - and what a sensational building and body of art.  Liz sat outside with all our gear so the three of us could move around easily.  Dali himself conceived the entire idea of using the 14th century town hall building that was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (during his lifetime) - and of course there have been several additions since.

Dali Museum . . . with lovely eggs

Mmm . . . nice car!

Group huddle . . .

Meanwhile, back at the ‘hacienda’ the bikes were comparing notes about their would-be Power Ranger riders . . . I can declare that they have voted who are the best and worst riders but I am afraid I have been sworn to secrecy!

“Did you see the way they approached those corners yesterday?”

Another ‘Helpful’ Local . . .

Even though he was once resident of Cadaques and called Figueres home, I am afraid Señor Dail didn’t have much practical advice about anything at all – and judging from his art, practicality was probably never his strong point!!

More Planning . . .

We then headed back to L'Escala via the smelly part of Figueres (piggeries probably – I wish the Power Rangers could do something about that!) to sort a few more things out, have a beer at the hotel and plan tomorrow's ride to Carcassonne.  It was interesting - at one stage we had two maps, my iPad, John's Android tablet and Garmin open or on at the same time.

The route is finally settled - which is the very the way that I would have gone if it was left up to me . . . ride up the rest of the Costa Brava then up one of the Pyrenees’ valleys and finally across a couple of high passes and eventually into Carcassonne from the south.

Sunset on Another Lovely Day . . .

Dinner was at the delightful Café de la Ríba on the waterfront - I managed to capture some lovely images as the sun went down both from the foreshore and in the restaurant.  We had two €17 set meals to share between five (which included two bottles of wine) . . . so that was wonderful.

We were back at the hotel at about 10:00pm so everyone crashed - except me as I had some of this to do.

The secret navigation team meeting!

These guys were pretty cool!

You Are Being Watched . . .

In some ‘late breaking news’ we can report that our paparazzi photographer used his special ‘royal watching’ lens to capture a pair of semi-naked Power Rangers lounging around the pool!  I am still waiting for million Euro offers from the Murdoch press so they can publish this image!
